It takes too much energy to post in multiple locations so I'm moving my operations over to<br />

It's a little bittersweet as I've built up a decent readership and have a good bunch of posts dating back to when I first arrived in the Driftless Area of Minnesota. Thanks to everyone who's followed MN Driftless Fly Fishing! Head over to Whitewater Valley Flies and keep an eye out for new posts over there.</div>

I've been busy with work and more work so I've only made brief forays into the Park. Those precious few hours over the last three weeks kept me fueled. Fishing has been good.</div>

These big rainbows fought hard on the 7' 9" three weight. Fish have been eating various midge patterns including the size 18 red brassie and zebra midges. I used the net which really helps. In my experience rainbows get especially wiggly! I missed some good photos when the fish slipped through my gentle grip.</div>

The colors on these bows are incredible. Pictures do not do justice to the vivid reds, pinks, purples, silver, and iridescence in these fish. This weekend I finally had a few days open. With icy temps in the forecast the plan was to fish a little and hang out inside a bunch!</div>

With a little snow on the ground I carefully hiked around and fished for a few hours both today and yesterday. Stocker bows and smaller browns readily ate various colored size 18 midge patterns.</div>

I didn't take a bunch of pics on either day. Every time my hands got wet after unhooking a fish (which I did for most fish in the net) left my hands frozen. The aim was to limit exposure of the trout and of my cold hands to the frigid air, which this time of the year can make a trip miserable. It felt good to stretch my legs in the woods and bother a few trout. I took next week off work to hunt and fish so stay tuned!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I give him a pass though since he's reppin' the Brewers! This buttery brown is pretty close to the spawn. Jesse pulled it in quick with his spinning rod and after admiring the fish for a brief moment released it into the pool from which it came. Jesse also landed a 19 inch brute yesterday! I didn't land the lunker of my desire but brought plenty of fish to hand.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Jesse used a Rapala briefly but focused mostly on his spinner game. I started out with a streamer which fished really well until around 1030am when baetis mayflies (size 20ish light green) started coming off. I switched to a size 20 comparadun pattern with trimmed hackle used for the wing. It's a dainty fly that matches these more diminutive mayflies.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
A few larger than average trout took the mayfly. Fish ate consistently in pools and long flats but proved a tough quarry with such clear stream conditions. After a long, somewhat brutal walk back to the cars we decided to head to another stream known to harbor some bigguns.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I fished the same streamer pattern that I've been using lately and it worked well. Fish were rising consistently on this stream as well so I rounded out the afternoon with a few on dries!</div>

I was Raised on Pike and Bass from a young age. My brother and I fished a few really good rivers in southeastern Wisconsin that held Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass, and we fished them often. We mostly used conventional gear until we reached 14 or 15 when fly gear became our tools of choice. I've focused so much on trout over the last 6 or 7 years that I've ignored a couple of familiar species in somewhat familiar environments (medium sized warm water rivers). My friend wanted to chase Muskie today so we did. The Muskies out ran us but the Pike and Bass contributed to an awesome day enjoying what Southeastern Minnesota has to offer!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
This fish took a large, flashy streamer and fought well above his weight on a 7 weight. Notice the heron scar on his back. It looks like I have a mini dip in my lip but I can assure you I don't, not that there's anything wrong with that (Seinfeld fans?).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
This fish smashed the fly and put up a great battle. The fly was languishing near the surface toward the end of my retrieve when he hit. It was one of those splashy pike attacks that makes you second guess dipping your hands in the water when you wash off the pike slime.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Jon got on board with this solid pike! It hit the fly as it dropped from the surface. After a spectacular battle, during which the slime rocket took strong hard runs against Jon's 8 weight, the fish came to hand. Jon released him to the chilly waters on a cloudy, cold day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
I remarked to John as I made a few strips on my first cast in this spot that we would certainly get a fish right away. As I turned back to look at my fly this fish smashed it! We parked on shore while I landed the strong shouldered beast. Wire leaders and strong hooks were a must and our 7 and 8 weight fly rods handled these fish with ease.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
John hit this beautiful smallie in a neat piece of water. It put a surprisingly deep bend into his 8 weight. The bite started to shut down as temps cooled and cloud cover thickened. We also flew through a lot of water without fishing after allocating too much time to the first 1.5 miles of the 8 mile float.</div>

I got out couple times this week and found fish in some streams seemingly done with the spawn while in others still in pre-spawn mode. I've fished a combination of nymph patterns and my wolley bugger-ish and had success with both. The five weight accompanied me on all adventures.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This fish had a strong little kype. I'm finding most of my fish in deep, froggy water pools and in the tail outs of deeper runs.</div>

I'm running low on flies and will have to tie up a few of my fall faves to effectively round out the extended season. Most of Minnesota's Driftless trout streams close on October 15th but a few in State Parks and in towns where fisherman and hunters won't overlap. It very likely protects spawning trout from being targeted and keeps people off there nests, called reds.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
On Tuesday evening storms threatened but never materialized directly above me. The rest of the week it's been spitting light rain with overcast skies. Temps have ranged from the low 80's to the mid 40's. I don't think it's impacted the fishing much as fish know winter's coming.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This was the biggest fish of the week. Probably around 16-17 inches. This fish seemed like a post spawn fish but maybe not. One easy way to differentiate spawners from pre- and post-spawn fish by looking at the fins for signs of damage. I plan to fish a bunch until the 15th so stay tuned!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This was the plan for today. Bigger flies for bigger trout. John and I both eagerly awaited the weekend. We discussed a few options and settled on walking around and swingin', twitchin', strippin', and dead driftin' bigger flies on a few stretches of much beloved waters. I tied up a half dozen of the flies pictured above and carried a small container of midges, scud, and some small midge emergers just in case. A few heavier tungsten beaded nymphs made the trip as well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
We both landed a few fish by the time this stout brown trout chased down my fly. I fished a 9' five weight that I've been diggin' lately. The rod typically performs really well but I'm using heavily saturated line and found casting to be difficult at times. These were tight quarters so we fished close together, often switching per fish.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
John used a bunny leech lookin' thing with a deer hair collar (I think). Once we started tying into 'em faster John remarked that fish struck
much more aggressively when the fly was swung and twitched against the
current. We both thoroughly enjoyed fishing this stretch of water and toyed with the idea of continuing on. We decided instead to check out another spot that has been haunting my waking moments for the past year. I had a good feeling we could find a biggun. We hiked in a good distance before starting. After tossing larger flies for around a half hour I decided to rig up a pink squirrel of prey. A few 12-13 inchers came to hand before I hooked into a log.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_1piLv7k6DMjy9w6l6JRLRGTfp04Tnxk_WyAVNUyQ_ET8FClFWZUDrfllXmDw5aKE88ljShGxIdhbHqPNqsR0OeCCG3ZBriEwmk1DOzlOk6vZBmz1LVIN2Io5cc7dliykfiu-ct5f1UK1/s1600/IMG_5806.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_1piLv7k6DMjy9w6l6JRLRGTfp04Tnxk_WyAVNUyQ_ET8FClFWZUDrfllXmDw5aKE88ljShGxIdhbHqPNqsR0OeCCG3ZBriEwmk1DOzlOk6vZBmz1LVIN2Io5cc7dliykfiu-ct5f1UK1/s400/IMG_5806.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I set the hook, she let of a great flash, and the fight was on! John came over the net the beast with a tiny little net. To his credit John wielded the net with extreme precision, likely cutting the fight by a little bit. After a few quick pics she was sent back to the depths.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
After landing a few more little ones we headed to town to have lunch with John's wife. She put together an awesome little picnic lunch. They headed on a hike after lunch and I headed to a nearby stream to try my luck again on the big fly. I landed many between 8-12 inches and rolled a few slightly larger. I arrived home to find my pictures from last night still on my camera... So here they are!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Today I provided my services to guide Ed and Dave on a couple driftless gems. We met up at Kwick Trip (where else!) before taking a short drive to one of my favorite little spots. We rigged up with nymphs while hoping for some dry fly action. Temps hovered in the mid 60's and slowly grew cooler as a front came through. Skies were overcast and a gentle breeze became progressively more bothersome as the day went on. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid5w7b_fouwlWj3m0_1EtkP3Gzk44CnjJmlDsy_pjkDKn8id58ypPapKMQjiKG3inG5OTC_KygOe8Bk-L_8pAh_FYil35zPqkIrLewKL6ELe0lx1Rjm1CYDH4hbL2VjlpO-bJ59iolMqUh/s1600/IMG_5729.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid5w7b_fouwlWj3m0_1EtkP3Gzk44CnjJmlDsy_pjkDKn8id58ypPapKMQjiKG3inG5OTC_KygOe8Bk-L_8pAh_FYil35zPqkIrLewKL6ELe0lx1Rjm1CYDH4hbL2VjlpO-bJ59iolMqUh/s400/IMG_5729.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After a few smaller fish came to hand Ed took this deep bodied brook trout. Things were slower than I expected and we never really found one fly that got 'em going. They ate various nymphs and slashed at a wolley bugger and quill mayfly. Fish rose infrequently yet skies were clear of bugs. A steady breeze didn't help either. But Dave didn't care...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFFld3dksrva_1-pe2DvHSzUbJhQDKXDotcRuzZ_dJZx9nwLe2v-AjY10sqAgvQ9eP7iTqzEc4CoxzNUEqtgiLvZiLJ0bJWt3wl1ik26ei68p7n3LUMDeu7Jnu7Ugm9-gV1by39lqpY3lq/s1600/IMG_5730.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1279" data-original-width="1600" height="254" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFFld3dksrva_1-pe2DvHSzUbJhQDKXDotcRuzZ_dJZx9nwLe2v-AjY10sqAgvQ9eP7iTqzEc4CoxzNUEqtgiLvZiLJ0bJWt3wl1ik26ei68p7n3LUMDeu7Jnu7Ugm9-gV1by39lqpY3lq/s320/IMG_5730.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
He landed this above average brown trout with Ed and I looking on! This stream was way weedier than usual and some of the pools that usually fish well were void of trout. Pictured below is Ed launching casts through the wind with precision.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3918XdHTrbisQcLenRwwkf_iTYIroaaXzq8uYuXrc-hg4AI8ZXkFRtcdQXv8HTdc5yINOboYw83TVwHBKyEHkqaC3W8g5r3WR1in0dvFGTBDzSksQomP_gxR8rRr9jG8nPppOEmWhNoBP/s1600/IMG_5739.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3918XdHTrbisQcLenRwwkf_iTYIroaaXzq8uYuXrc-hg4AI8ZXkFRtcdQXv8HTdc5yINOboYw83TVwHBKyEHkqaC3W8g5r3WR1in0dvFGTBDzSksQomP_gxR8rRr9jG8nPppOEmWhNoBP/s400/IMG_5739.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After a few fish to hand a piece we decided to head to another area stream that the guys hadn't fished. Ed landed a few tiny browns out of that stream but fishing was slow there too. Overall it was nice to spend the morning out of doors and with fellow fly fishing fanatics. Fish were not as aggressive as typical for this time of year. I've been hearing the same from the last few fisherman I've spoken with. I suspect fish are still recovering from the last two cold fronts and heavy rains the area has seen over the last few weeks. Get out there and fish if you can. The late c&r season ends October 15th. After that the trout fishing season becomes restricted to a few State Parks and handful of streams located within city limits.</div>

The wife and I are headed to Viroqua for the afternoon but before we go I wanted to check out a spot that's always really productive for me this time of year. I arrived on stream by around 8am and fished until 930am. This spot requited a little hike made more strenuous by saturated soil along the banks. I managed to stay upright while tempting two nice trout beyond their restraint.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiazFKxZaIDWck6WA9qjY7Zi6BJLgzQwvDjvGOF1WZg6q0OBJ5GWWbdwYR55XwKg8VR7J50_vR9O3lA0TiF9oLr7A-C81nuZvHjUNI1BVAupJefOh6Pp6CT4DFUaC2ZvfPMUtgZ_Yf-g5se/s1600/IMG_5718.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiazFKxZaIDWck6WA9qjY7Zi6BJLgzQwvDjvGOF1WZg6q0OBJ5GWWbdwYR55XwKg8VR7J50_vR9O3lA0TiF9oLr7A-C81nuZvHjUNI1BVAupJefOh6Pp6CT4DFUaC2ZvfPMUtgZ_Yf-g5se/s400/IMG_5718.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After trying numerous heavy nymphs fished deep with no success I switched over to a streamer. The first cast I ripped through the pool and on the second practiced more of a dredging slow twitch presentation. This fish ate the fly on that second cast. After a good battle the 5 weight proved overpowering and she swam right into the net.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVwqTHNoBC1rx6pcnbVbqcOdkOc6p7wZ71LJBbXBMosH7beJg_nS9OCbkztw_Mn3ypIYc9DHkw9cC_ZjesIpbEllrgjojbYpTwtXbeVoxtVOxfwvqo4C9eidBLAqTQwXYdMKtsaKr0_FV_/s1600/IMG_5721.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVwqTHNoBC1rx6pcnbVbqcOdkOc6p7wZ71LJBbXBMosH7beJg_nS9OCbkztw_Mn3ypIYc9DHkw9cC_ZjesIpbEllrgjojbYpTwtXbeVoxtVOxfwvqo4C9eidBLAqTQwXYdMKtsaKr0_FV_/s400/IMG_5721.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This fish put up a great fight as well. After around 45 minutes without success I headed home early. On to Viroqua! By the way, the fish I've encountered have not been spawning yet but they're sure getting ready. That means fish are hungry and aggressive. We only have a little over a month before season changes restrict our stream options in Southeast Minnesota.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This rod is for my friend Jim who I met in college. It's a 7 piece 8ft 3wt backpacking rod that Jim plans to use while chasing trout in the alpine lakes of the Sierra Nevada range in California.</div>

I really like the look of the brown thread on top of the green blank. I just got a bunch of blanks to work with including a 4pc 10ft 3wt euro nymphing rod. Can't wait to get started on those!</div>

Today I hit a spot for an hour or two after work, arriving on stream at around 545pm and leaving by 8pm. Clouds of midges, a few olive mayflies and some spare caddis fluttered about. The fish ate midge dries, mayfly emergers, and the trusty zebra midge. The stream was clear but not crystal. The banks, soggy!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi-rWIDRl5UqiTGthA_yRCba0xljx8sbZca6vxQ8WDwtyImm1-4kgWkdY49f92Dpc57uTDZ_QdjYPyz6QrvfWoOTOUkN3PJHDtnuXomq8IZE5Sg0xz0FduX4PLjpsmVsH8n92W62DfWylu/s1600/IMG_5693.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1199" data-original-width="1600" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi-rWIDRl5UqiTGthA_yRCba0xljx8sbZca6vxQ8WDwtyImm1-4kgWkdY49f92Dpc57uTDZ_QdjYPyz6QrvfWoOTOUkN3PJHDtnuXomq8IZE5Sg0xz0FduX4PLjpsmVsH8n92W62DfWylu/s400/IMG_5693.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One of the first fish to take the midge dry was a little tiger trout! This stream is pretty evenly populated by brookies and browns with this spot right in the middle of the range in which they overlap. Shortly after landing this specimen and a few others I tied on a mayfly emerger.</div>

This pretty brown trout put up a great fight after taking the mayfly quickly after it hit the surface.</div>

If ever there was a good evening to fish instead of mowing the lawn tonight was it. I've been kind of busy lately limiting me to frequent yet brief outings. Fortunately fishing has been great. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
These two came to hand in brief succession. Fishing was pretty fast tonight with fish coming to hand every few minutes. Changing flies and presentations to match all the different bugs yielded continued fish out of only a few pools.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
In the end I always tie on the san juan worm to dredge up a last fish! Temps measured in the high 60's while on stream and tonight is fixin' to be pretty cold. Today I even spotted a tree that had half orange leaves. Fall is close and with that comes fall fishing!</div>

My Dad and I went out this morning to chase trout for a meal before he and my Mom headed home from their MN vacation. They hit up the North Shore and ran into happy customer, and author of the book Heron Thieves, A Bat Out of Hell, and Other Fly Fishing Stories, Essays and Poems, Jim Holden! Dad and I sorted through some fish on swollen and murky stream and brought 4 home. We made wild rice and trout before the parents headed eastward. After hanging around home for a couple hours I decided to chase trout on a tiny little brookie stream that got a little washed out by some of the heavier rainfalls we've had over the last week.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT0bJ5T1c2KwaUZRayhdNWfvDtyOsr9CsloNEMuC3YKq-DwZDtxeZahQstuBEpFVp-ALWazX4FPrbJGt8kTZ8lpmoKB2jvodkBfV28cZ1gCHmRcJzJlozcbXgqT7s5Wg6yiLq-8LnxxOk-/s1600/IMG_5687.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT0bJ5T1c2KwaUZRayhdNWfvDtyOsr9CsloNEMuC3YKq-DwZDtxeZahQstuBEpFVp-ALWazX4FPrbJGt8kTZ8lpmoKB2jvodkBfV28cZ1gCHmRcJzJlozcbXgqT7s5Wg6yiLq-8LnxxOk-/s400/IMG_5687.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This was never a waterfall before! Even this tiny stream was a little clouded from the rains we received last night. I immediately noticed fish surfacing and bugs flying as I made my approach. Little bwo's, midges, the occasional cranefly and the occasional caddis fluttered about throughout my time on stream. I started off casting a size 18 quill bodied mayfly which worked well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
This stout brookie bobbed for the fly quickly after it landed on the water. Notice his tail is kind of gnarled up. This can be a sign the fish was stocked or could already be close to spawning. It seems a little to early for that but I plan to keep an eye out and encourage others to do the same.</div>

I hoped to catch almost all brookies but found a majority of browns in this stream. Over the last few years I'd only caught maybe 2-3 browns in this stream, and only near the confluence with a larger trout stream. Today I must've caught over a dozen little browns and only three brook trout. I hope the browns don't take over!</div>

I spotted one really nice brown of about 16-18 inches but was unable to illicit a strike. Most fish came on the quill bodied fly although the zebra midge in various colors held it's own. I fished from 300ish until 600pm under cloudy skies and ideal conditions on this little creek.</div>

My buddy John and I connected earlier in the week and decided to get up early to do a float 'n fish for trout. John wanted to ride the canoe so instead of my usual kayak ride with canoed down the river. We met up at 6am and got on the water by 7am.</div>

There it is in all of it's glory, the Merrick Tennessean. We were a little tentative about paddling through this rocky river but ran into few rocks. We fished a little from the boat while also wading in some areas.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
We landed fish consistently all day. John switched between a few patterns but found the olive mayfly and elk hair caddis most effective. I used the quill bodied mayfly in size 16 for most of the day.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's John hooked up on one of a few trout hooked in this little riffle. We definitely noticed fish keying in on dries with Trico, Olives, Caddis, and Craneflies coming off at different times of the day.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
By the time we pulled off the water around 230pm I must've landed around 50 trout! John did well also. While heading back to pick up his car in the afterglow of our trout fishing bonanza my car started to lose power while I hit the gas. Within less than a minute we found ourselves stopped in the middle of a gravel road down a remote valley. I had to mess with roadside assistance who gave the tow truck driver the wrong phone number and incomplete directions to locate us. What a pain. At least the fishing was good!</div>

After arriving home a little earlier than expected after work I decided to shirk my fly tying duties and take the pup for a little hike and fish. She's been a little neglected lately as the wife and I have been busy so today was her chance to catch up on missed adventures!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
There she is. Big momma Beazer isn't the best fishing dog. What she lacks in patience she makes up for in exuberance. With every fish she'd lunge into the water and snap at 'em. She listened ok but definitely spooked a few holes as I landed fish. Once to hand Beazer would only sniff and kiss the fish before losing interest.</div>

Fish were risking sporadically to various bugs that skittered over the surface. I swung a size 16 quill bodied mayfly through faster current and tailouts of pools and landed a bunch of fish.</div>

After Beazer spooked this pool we headed back toward the car. It was a beautiful night on the stream and fish were looking up. Around 1 1/2 dozen came to hand between 430-7pm. They should continue to look up for quill bodied mayflies through the rest of the summer and into fall when the same pattern will work well in slightly smaller sizes.</div>

I arrived home from work thinking tonight would be a good night to find a hatch on a nearby stream that I've neglected over the last few months. With a new fly to test and a few hours to kill I arrived on stream around 6pm.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
After fishing down stream a little bit I decided to head back up to avoid the cows. I didn't notice a bull. After landing a few little ones I hopped to target some larger risers. Fish rose consistently but action was not fast n furious.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This was the first halfway decent fish. He gently sipped the "spring creek comparadun". It is a comparadun style emergery dry fly tied with a trimmed hackle wing instead of deer hair. It sits very gently on the surface and works well on the most picky of trout.</div>

I didn't get a great picture of it but the profile is tasty! I spotted two types of mayflies, midges, and caddis fluttering around. I didn't try other patterns since I really wanted to give this pattern some work.</div>

After missing a few nicer fish this stout brown took the fly. Fish seemed especially sensitive to the line and were put down after only a cast or two. Blue skies and crystal clear water didn't help. I fished with an 8ft leader, 2ft of 2x, 1.5 feet of 4x, and 1ft of 6x and even that setup was a little beefy but my 9ft 5wt helped enable long casts.</div>

This fish put up a great fight. Not the prettiest fish but fun to catch! Stay tuned, I have a few rods I need to work on, a float and fish trip planned, and tons more flies to tie.</div>

While I haven't gotten out for long periods at a time I took a few hours here and there over the last couple days and chased browns, bows, and brookies. Streams have been crystal clear and fishing decent, although a little stain would be nice.</div>

On a sunny day I chased stocker bows on a new piece of habitat improved water. It was a great day of fishing and between bows I hooked into a few little brownies. On the way home I hit a tiny little stream and it went well.</div>

Fish ate San Juan worms and zebra midges readily. When fish rose within range they responded well to a size 18 quill bodied mayfly emerger. That evening I chased trout with Jon again. After giving him a ton of shit about hanging up in the trees and missing strikes he went and landed a nice rainbow!</div>

We encountered plenty of rising fish as the rain started to fall and after landing a few between us decided to call it a day. On Tuesday afternoon I headed out for an hour or so and chased brookies.</div>

I was rewarded with a few little buggers. Brookies and browns are just starting to don their spawning shades and it won't be long before the bigguns come out to play! Stay tuned.</div>

I've fished a few times this weekend. Last night I went out with Deaner to chase trout in the evening. We each landed a few (he more than I). We hadn't fished together for a while it was nice to catch up. Here he is casting a loop toward some finicky fish.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I met up with a friend to fish early this morning. We hit the stream by 730ish and fished till noon. We changed flies consistently and pulled 'em in on streamers, nymphs, midges, and princes among others. We fished one at a time switching between fish or periods of a few minutes without fish. John wasn't used to fishing the tighter water of the stream we fished today and spent a lot of time in the weeds. When he did land the fly in the water he did quite well!</div>

This one was fun to build. I'll be sad to see it go when the owner comes to get 'er. This was built on an H&H Ftx blank and other components came from Proof Fly Fishing. I have a few more rods to work on coming up but hit me up if interested in a build.</div>

Early last week my buddy Jesse pointed out that we've been fishing the Sunday morning after he attends the Houston Hoedown for the last two years. Jesse wanted to make it 3. Additionally he challenged me to a race to land a brook, brown, and rainbow trout. We arrived on stream by around 830am and the Hoedown Showdown began.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I started off real strong! I landed a few on the San Juan worm but quickly hit my stride fishing with a gray size 18 tungsten beaded zebra midge. At one point I turned a nice 17-18 incher but didn't land the hook.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This water was really cool and springs were noted throughout the stretch of water we fished. After landing this buttery brown I hooked into a few larger than average trout.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
At this point Jesse and I each landed a brookie and a brown. His brookie was around 13"! Fishing stayed really hot for me on the midge. Fish ate it dead drifted and drifted slowly with a twitch. Eventually I approached the most perfect little run with a few branches hanging in. I made a somewhat errant cast which landed on the inside seam. As soon as my fly began to drag in the current I spotted a nice fish dart out from some overhanging grass and the fight was on!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This was my big fish of the day. I appreciated that Jesse ran up to snap a pic. It didn't take long for me to return the favor. This dude can fish!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Jesse fished with a combination of Rapala's, spinners, and worms. I know a lot of fly fishers tend to be put off by people fishing with worms but I watched this dude hook every worm caught trout perfectly in the lip. He also carried a cooler and planned to keep any gut hooked fish.</div>

After pulling in at least a few dozen between the two of us we called it a day around 330pm. It was a great Showdown. I landed the biggest brown at approximately 16". No super big ones today but our average sized trout was probably around 12 or 13 inches.</div>

It is a Whitewater Valley Flies 9 ft five weight built on a H&H Ftx blank. I like the look of silver thread wraps over the bluish hue of the blank. Cost is $200.00. If intersted in this or any other rod send me an email at cgrie750 at hotmail dot com.</div>

I met up with a friend this morning and fished before and after delivering a new fly rod to a special customer. More on that in a minute. We arrived on stream around 845am to find crystal clear water and sunny conditions.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
This picture was washed out so I edited it up a little bit. I may have to incorporate it into a new business card. Shortly after I took this picture Tim missed a couple hook sets in a row, amateur hour;)</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
We landed a high average and yes, Tim did redeem himself. This fish ate a beetle off a perfectly placed cast around 30 feet upstream. He stayed low, used a long leader, and made his first couple casts to the run count. It's always fun to watch how others approach a stream. I always leave our fishing trips feeling like I've learned something.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
After walking back to the car we headed into town to meet up with Jim Holden, a great fly fisher, and author of a new book, titled "Heron Thieves, A Bat Out of Hell, and Other Fly Fishing Stories, Essays and Poems". </div>

I enjoyed building this rod and I hope if serves it's purpose well. After chatting with Jim for a while Tim and I returned to the stream. This stream held fish but it was not fast and furious. We took a number of approaches and settled on the trusty San Juan worm. We did fish streamers for a while and despite landing a couple here and there none broke the scale.</div>

Unfortunately Tim busted his rod (or maybe fortunately since now I've got one to build for him:). We probably landed 2 dozen or so between the two of us before calling it a day at 430pm. I always enjoy fishing with Tim and hope he gets back this way soon.</div>

I got up early to take a few seasoned fly anglers to chase trout but after receiving word they would need to reschedule I decided to head out solo. I planned to chase brookies locally and set out by 7ish.</div>

Numerous good sized brookies came to hand on those little buggers. The streamer landed a few although after the sun hit the water hard the streamer bite died. I switched around a lot today but easily landed the most trout on a size 16 quill bodied mayfly emerger. Fished dead drifted, skated downstream, and twitched sunken worked really well. I landed quite a few decent brookies and browns before tying into this beast!</div>

This picture does not do him justice. The jaw was kyped out real good! As I shifted from this shot to take one of him by the grip of my fly rod he squirmed a little and rather than give him the death grip I released him to the drink. I'd guess he's around 13". I fished on and by the time I headed off the stream around 11am I must've unhooked at least a few dozen trout.</div>

On two occasions I hooked into some really nice fish and after violent splashes on the surface the hooks came loose. Those fish will bring me back before too long.</div>

Last Friday night I received a text from a good fishin' buddy, George saying he planned to squeeze in a day of Driftless trout fishing on Sunday. We picked a stream and met there around 730am. He's fished the MN Driftless a decent amount but I wanted to introduce him to one of my favorite little streams. He's a high stickin' son of a bitch, which to fly fishermen means he fishes close to the stream with his line tight to heavier flies fished deep. It's fun to watch him fish and observing his technique always ups my nymphing game. I'm always trying to sell him the virtues of nymphing froggy water.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Fish are very spooky in this stream and on this day the river ran crystal clear with the sun high in the sky. I landed some fish but George killed it!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This fish took some skill to land. The chunker dove for undercuts and submerged rocks to no avail. After fishing a good section of this stream we headed to another really technical stream to chase brookies. We landed a good number brookies and browns on this little stream. We were surprised at how fish ate such a variety of flies. We caught fish on various nymphs, midges, dry flies, streamers, and sj worms. I'd guess our combined effort saw 40+ fish to hand by the time we headed back to town. It was great to get out and fun to watch George cast into the weeds;) </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This morning I headed out after finishing up some chores around the house and working on a few fly rods. This stream was clear despite receiving around 2 inches of rain over the last two days. I cycled through a few small midge patterns before settling on a San Juan worm. That was the ticket!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUeWov2BzYvL1b5Ya035rwVzK_EorHIg201X0cLNZfMXk_kWT_7g6ZPp3h6Je75rymXN3A1Vq-e0Ta3mr2OnxpO5BsWv-rhuinX-18o0IDV1UiYFpruGN4I4t2msCq0NRwke-27AoVmENY/s1600/IMG_5203.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUeWov2BzYvL1b5Ya035rwVzK_EorHIg201X0cLNZfMXk_kWT_7g6ZPp3h6Je75rymXN3A1Vq-e0Ta3mr2OnxpO5BsWv-rhuinX-18o0IDV1UiYFpruGN4I4t2msCq0NRwke-27AoVmENY/s400/IMG_5203.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This little hog put put up a monumental fight on my 7' 9" three weight. Shortly after landing this fish I decided to head home to continue working on rods and tie a few flies. In around three hours of fishing I landed at least 20 trout. At one point around 11am I tied on a quill bodied mayfly emerger in size 16 and landed six or seven fish within only five minutes! After taking care of business at home my buddy Jesse and I hatched a plan to fish another nearby small stream in the later afternoon. We arrived on stream around 415pm, he with his spinner and me with the trusty San Juan worm.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHqlh7YXy2RaHvFHplPZ58sGxTFHzYfAc7HeAPa5YyrJE9pzdzXq8RXJJO2yXHlJSDI74HOX3LwJKSs2nlxoBIsblKuGOCu2jaWYzugMTG07Ax8zQiXnICCDYPG-j5vzx1dQHqourfCJWw/s1600/IMG_5208.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHqlh7YXy2RaHvFHplPZ58sGxTFHzYfAc7HeAPa5YyrJE9pzdzXq8RXJJO2yXHlJSDI74HOX3LwJKSs2nlxoBIsblKuGOCu2jaWYzugMTG07Ax8zQiXnICCDYPG-j5vzx1dQHqourfCJWw/s400/IMG_5208.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The San Juan worm strikes again. I called Jesse over to net this one because I hooked up with it off a heroic cast down stream and the refraction magnified it. I thought I had a beast!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHPNgCzhfD23PKac_AKRubAmcqebnxIbaqF6l4z0O9M4jk8XqjLVxMHY7afQYrsf6MMQ2itz4lsdKHXO4tB7-mRauA634DYXaxUgUxtPvXD0hBTefzpKzJ3ahwKtkrN3f4m8aai-nM_r5z/s1600/IMG_5211.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHPNgCzhfD23PKac_AKRubAmcqebnxIbaqF6l4z0O9M4jk8XqjLVxMHY7afQYrsf6MMQ2itz4lsdKHXO4tB7-mRauA634DYXaxUgUxtPvXD0hBTefzpKzJ3ahwKtkrN3f4m8aai-nM_r5z/s400/IMG_5211.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then I landed this really nice one. The worm was pulling in weight and all with the new rod I built for myself. Every time one rolls off the drying rack I feel a strong urge to break it in:)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
The fish in this stream are always so vibrant. I've landed a few brookies out of here in the past and they tend to be vibrant as well. The heat as you decent from the car through the vegetation and to the stream gets more hot and humid. At one point I fished in a little shaded plunge pool, knowing full well that a good trout lied in wait. After a good cast the fight was on.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This picture does not do this trout justice. Look at that big ol' fan of a tail! He put up a great battle in a tricky little piece of water! Jesse landed a few good ones as the afternoon turned to evening. By around 7pm we called it a day.</div>

Yesterday I went fishing in Wisconsin with Eric. He talked up some private land, family land, and eased sections of streams and was gracious enough to share them with me. We arrived in our fishy environs before 8am and immediately landed trout on the skittered mayfly emerger. With storms in the forecast and popping up throughout the day I stayed conscious of how far we strayed from the car and at one point we got back a minute or two before lightening and thunder enveloped the area.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVs4qE8hMk9nmaLwKluuJfGr34AKVxNmWfx8zeamjmsul0lgiSeMOSFMh4pcg27c1WRdlgxS_tRK2D9SJn77Os9_H-v9UHCcMC6YCDvUiQLL-ZjV_FOPlDW_VQx1jNjVyah2N4LePA9svD/s1600/IMG_5164.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="803" data-original-width="1600" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVs4qE8hMk9nmaLwKluuJfGr34AKVxNmWfx8zeamjmsul0lgiSeMOSFMh4pcg27c1WRdlgxS_tRK2D9SJn77Os9_H-v9UHCcMC6YCDvUiQLL-ZjV_FOPlDW_VQx1jNjVyah2N4LePA9svD/s400/IMG_5164.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
We fished some of he most picturesque little streams in Wisconsin! After landing a bunch of fish (nothing large), spot hopping, sweating our asses off, and getting eaten by gnats Eric keyed me in on a sweet little stretch of private water that he'd gained permission to fish.<br />

I had a great time but returned home more exhausted than I've been in a while. Today I planned to hit some streams and work on a few rods. Remember to check out <a href="http://www.whitewatervalleyflies.wordpress.com/">Whitewater Valley Flies</a> for flies and fly rods!</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge4thhBH9dQJm6u1MD_0YAv3IxHPJ4MpHjBEKOWj9j-bR8X1HzqvjXARLtkI7y6r6vliN_DuAuNQzbCjdIAtjE37328-9ts6uiC2BdG8a74BkT786bmx2Qz0DOWQlWd5dI-IeZTmPpWpOa/s1600/IMG_5103.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="873" data-original-width="1600" height="217" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge4thhBH9dQJm6u1MD_0YAv3IxHPJ4MpHjBEKOWj9j-bR8X1HzqvjXARLtkI7y6r6vliN_DuAuNQzbCjdIAtjE37328-9ts6uiC2BdG8a74BkT786bmx2Qz0DOWQlWd5dI-IeZTmPpWpOa/s400/IMG_5103.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Yesterday I went on a death march with a friend and my brand new rod! I planned to sell this one but I've made good progress over the last few builds I've done and figured I need to represent my rods better on stream (I've been using a nice little 7' 9" three weight but it doesn't have the same attraction). The sun was bright, temperatures warm, and water still pretty cloudy. San Juan worms on the menu.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFwLvxkwNESZlyW0tjpQTJCyuJr4W5rxHNWJTHMaeGrZLkez67_tiVdNSP5N9QLIRWa_yRv0IiwSlCWWO2zn5MN7Mb8denkECjpnKI7ezpKrDwE38NnyizQxN1X-XajQfJdWKgKaCeRYi_/s1600/IMG_5120.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFwLvxkwNESZlyW0tjpQTJCyuJr4W5rxHNWJTHMaeGrZLkez67_tiVdNSP5N9QLIRWa_yRv0IiwSlCWWO2zn5MN7Mb8denkECjpnKI7ezpKrDwE38NnyizQxN1X-XajQfJdWKgKaCeRYi_/s400/IMG_5120.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This brownie gave a great accounting of itself but came to hand after a short battle. We went hard in tough conditions and after a dozen or so smaller trout each we headed home. We probably hiked 5 miles total and were happy to see the car.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibvYypEFYuPIWPfSZ99zTgvUxfVVjPNkW7plp1YszQvRmpKuf7VcoXISBVPKk5cgRtjGgNffvUn9TXVJ4JZ6RTAsEOYWX12nrvMfD4jgmLMNVr8Zhk_y8KbV673dABQ97KmbaLWe2bkYEq/s1600/IMG_5129.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibvYypEFYuPIWPfSZ99zTgvUxfVVjPNkW7plp1YszQvRmpKuf7VcoXISBVPKk5cgRtjGgNffvUn9TXVJ4JZ6RTAsEOYWX12nrvMfD4jgmLMNVr8Zhk_y8KbV673dABQ97KmbaLWe2bkYEq/s400/IMG_5129.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Tonight I headed out to test out a few fly patterns. I wasn't out long but managed to turn a few decent fish. I didn't connect on any of the larger fish. One size smaller on the dry fly would have been ideal.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioPdfMoOBRigy1Y9lB6VOOVpakKwHDikgE_ElvTOi6Ur6QNMvNLQI4ooPHWwL1pKrGEcMNnUugwgArK7ldaQYDapfuhplv2fBYiOVlKNlQ8PehMbFOA2hB9rRbZs-wlkJ_fL__9E663did/s1600/IMG_5137.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1199" data-original-width="1600" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioPdfMoOBRigy1Y9lB6VOOVpakKwHDikgE_ElvTOi6Ur6QNMvNLQI4ooPHWwL1pKrGEcMNnUugwgArK7ldaQYDapfuhplv2fBYiOVlKNlQ8PehMbFOA2hB9rRbZs-wlkJ_fL__9E663did/s400/IMG_5137.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This was the average size caught today. After an hour or so of fishing and 7 or 8 to hand I headed home, but not before admiring the new rod for a little bit! This blank roll casts like a dream but in a 9' 5 weight it's a little bulkier than I'm used to. This time a year I usually start to tie into some larger fish so hopefully the larger rod will be put to good use.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjclLcGZD7CPz7U9C7iUcz4kYi7-fzL5DKeTZkjEp7TTPZQE3WF3jKGJvDwgHV4IcyAmVDYquMMIXaeHLVDZNEs0MWtHOfxzNB67K2A5M_DNqTrqP3FjdA2n0uJ1t7JHt2T_-pwujNDTyvI/s1600/IMG_5149.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjclLcGZD7CPz7U9C7iUcz4kYi7-fzL5DKeTZkjEp7TTPZQE3WF3jKGJvDwgHV4IcyAmVDYquMMIXaeHLVDZNEs0MWtHOfxzNB67K2A5M_DNqTrqP3FjdA2n0uJ1t7JHt2T_-pwujNDTyvI/s400/IMG_5149.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Stay tuned, I got an order for a 3 weight that I'll be working on over the next week. It's gonna be sweet!</div>

Yesterday I caught trout of all shades. After finding my first option muddied I assumed my other ideas may be blown out. I headed to a nearby small stream expecting a little stain but found conditions clear. With bright skies my 945am arrival was not ideal. I tied on two feet of 4x tippet and one and a half feet of 5x on the end of my 7.5 foot leader. Using a very small Lightening Strike brand indicator I dragged various small tungsten beaded midge patterns around two and a half to three feet deep. Fish responded well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVpvYmb0MiRkaZKV-vlZA4fW_NVIafxOc9iO1SWj7uDcCSwSUjkttdWmHr2Uq6slP2uuV0J2lw8aJPVQdVSDz6XdknFfcnvgWIsfRykrsaXo1bGxkWCMb5py25iQBHrC_2Qw2mG9IP02op/s1600/IMG_5012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1050" data-original-width="1600" height="261" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVpvYmb0MiRkaZKV-vlZA4fW_NVIafxOc9iO1SWj7uDcCSwSUjkttdWmHr2Uq6slP2uuV0J2lw8aJPVQdVSDz6XdknFfcnvgWIsfRykrsaXo1bGxkWCMb5py25iQBHrC_2Qw2mG9IP02op/s400/IMG_5012.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Great trout came from thin, often overlooked water. This guy took a size 18 red brassie tied with a black nickle tungsten bead. I fished my way up a little before camping at a ways upstream on a good chunk of water. Fishing has been lights out for me since focusing more on my midge game. My 7' 9" three weight worked ok but with the taller grass I'm finding a 9" three or four weight would be ideal.</div>

This beautiful brookie and brownie took a size 18 gray zebra midge tied with a tungsten bead. As the sun grew higher and higher I had to make more and more impossibly long casts but with each well presented fly it seemed like a fish came to hand.</div>

I wish we had more good brookie streams around here. Out in Montana I had a few spots that were packed with 10-14 inch brookies. This stream is actually pretty similar to that one in a lot of ways, although smaller. </div>

I'm working on my left hand trout photography! This one turned out pretty good. I tied into almost an equal number of browns and brookies, although I did hook more brown trout. At a few points I rolled some really nice fish in the 15-17 inch range including one that looked like a brookie.</div>

After landing around 40 trout by 2pm I headed back to the car. Before calling it a day I leaned over the bridge though and hooked an aggressive little tiger trout!</div>

This handsome little tiger shot up from the bottom to snatch a gray zebra midge as I pulled it out of the water! Always happy to sight a tiger. Today I'm on call so I'll be tying up a storm and finishing off a 9' four weight. Stay tuned!</div>
